Abstract

Soil salinization, especially in arid and semi-arid regions, is one of the most widespread agroecological problems and poses a major obstacle to achieving high agricultural productivity, proper land resource management, and the implementation of sustainable agriculture. Mitigating, preventing, and combating the salinization of fertile soils requires the establishment of continuous monitoring systems across both time and space. This article presents a spatial analysis of long-term soil salinity in the irrigated lands of the Khojeli district of the Republic of Karakalpakstan. The obtained results were mapped using the classification adopted by FAO (The Food and Agriculture Organization) and the IDW (Inverse Distance Weighted) interpolation method within GIS (Geographic Information Systems) technologies. The findings reveal that between 2011 and 2023, the area of non-saline lands decreased sharply, while the extent of severely and extremely saline areas increased significantly. In particular, the period from 2019 to 2023 showed a marked intensification of salinization processes and a worsening of the ecological situation. The maps developed during the study may serve as a foundation for improving the ameliorative condition of irrigated soils and for organizing more efficient salt leaching operations in the Khojeli district.
