Abstract

The study was conducted on the laboratory plot assigned to the Department of Biology, Genetics, and Evolutionary Biology at the Faculty of Natural Sciences, Chirchik State Pedagogical University. This research focused on assessing three key physiological parameters—transpiration rate, total water content, and water retention capacity—in various cultivars of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) infected with Bean Common Mosaic Virus (BCMV).

The water regime of plant leaves serves as a fundamental physiological indicator of resistance to viral infections. The findings revealed that infection with LoMV led to a noticeable reduction in transpiration intensity across all tested cultivars, which can be attributed to impaired cellular structure and decreased stomatal activity. Total water content declined significantly under viral stress, most markedly in the 'White Bean' (by 36.7%), 'Turkey VIR' (31.1%), and 'Productive' (26.8%) cultivars.

Furthermore, a substantial decrease in water retention ability was observed, with reductions of 78.2% in the 'White Bean' and 75.9% in the 'Turkey VIR' cultivars. In contrast, the 'Ravot' and 'Calypso' cultivars maintained relatively stable values across all three parameters, suggesting a higher level of tolerance to BCMV infection.

These results offer valuable insights into the physiological responses of bean cultivars to viral stress and provide a scientific foundation for identifying stress-tolerant genotypes and guiding breeding programs aimed at developing virus-resistant bean varieties.
