Abstract

This article analyzes the cultural and educational life of the East Slavic diaspora in Turkestan (1918–1924) based on historical sources. The main focus is on the integration of Russian, Ukrainian, and Belarusian communities into the local socio-cultural environment, including issues of language, religion, lifestyle, and intermarriage, as well as their positive and negative outcomes. In particular, the study examines schools, cultural houses, libraries and reading rooms established by, or associated with, the East Slavic diaspora. The research reveals the impact of Soviet educational and cultural policies in Turkestan on the diaspora’s cultural and intellectual life, the social and familial factors of ethnic integration, and the constraints of geographic and ideological isolation. It also highlights the diaspora’s productive relations with the indigenous society and the processes of cultural exchange through educational institutions. The study relies on archival records, periodical publications, and scholarly works.
